What is IELTS?
IELTS stands for the International English Language Testing System. More than 2.5 million people take the IELTS test annually. It is accepted as a test of English language ability by the universities, enterprises, professional bodies such as the GMC and NMC, immigration officials, and the government institutions all over the world.
Test Format for IELTS
There are two types of IELTS examinations:
There are 4 sections for both modules: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. The parts of reading and writing are distinct for the 2 modules while the parts of listening and speaking are the same.
IELTS Reading (60 minutes)
Candidates are listed on several parameters. These involve whether they replied to the question series, used an appropriate language style, and arranged their thoughts. They will also be graded on grammatical precision, vocabulary repertoire, and their ability to correctly connect concepts, phrases, and paragraphs.
IELTS Listening (30 minutes)
It's a face-to-face speaking test with an IELTS interviewer. The test comes in 3 parts. The first is an introductory conversation; in the second, the candidate is given 1 minute to make a brief statement on a subject; in the third, the interviewer and the applicant will address some issues relating to the topic in section 2.
Candidates are distinguished by their ability to represent themselves simply and correctly, respond adequately to questions, their use of grammar and vocabulary, their level of 'naturality', and their pronunciation and intonation.
The IELTS Speaking Test can take place on another day relative to the other sections of the exam.
IELTS Scores
There is no pass or fail for the IELTS exam. Instead, you get a score between 1 and 9 for a set. This may include a half-point, like for example 6.5. Usually, most universities require a score of between 6 and 7. Some may require a minimum score in each of the four papers, too.
IELTS Fees
The fees are fixed by IELTS test centers, and thus these may vary from country to country. Candidates should, however, plan to pay about £150, € 190 or $200.
